Electrical Thermal Imaging Sunshine Coast
Non-invasive infrared scanning of switchboards, distribution boards, and electrical infrastructure for commercial and industrial sites.
Electrical thermal imaging is one of the most cost-effective ways to find faults before they cause downtime, fires, or insurance claims. Terawatt provides electrical thermal imaging across the Sunshine Coast for commercial and industrial operators who want to know what’s happening inside their switchboards without taking them offline.
We scan under load, document what we find, and deliver an audit-ready report that stands up to insurer and auditor review.
What Electrical Thermal Imaging Tells You
Every electrical connection generates a small amount of heat under load. A healthy connection sits within a predictable temperature range. A failing one (a loose terminal, a corroded lug, a deteriorating breaker, an overloaded circuit) runs hotter than its neighbours, sometimes by 20°C or more.
A thermal imaging camera makes that temperature difference visible. The scan is non-invasive, the equipment stays energised and under load, and a trained operator can scan a typical commercial switchboard in minutes.
What it reliably catches:
- Loose or under-torqued connections at terminals
- Corroded or oxidised joints
- Overloaded circuits and unbalanced phases
- Deteriorating circuit breakers and contactors
- Failing busbar joints
- Poor cable terminations
What it doesn't replace:
- Electrical testing (insulation resistance, earth continuity, RCD testing)
- Visual condition assessment
- Routine planned maintenance
Thermal imaging works best as part of a broader condition monitoring program, not as a standalone tick-box.
When Electrical Thermal Imaging Is Worth Doing
A few common triggers bring thermal imaging into the conversation
Insurance requirement
A growing number of commercial insurers ask for thermal imaging reports as part of policy renewal, particularly for higher-risk premises (warehousing, manufacturing, refrigeration-heavy retail).
Nuisance tripping or unexplained outages
A board that keeps tripping without an obvious cause is often hiding a thermal issue at a connection or breaker.
Age of the installation
Switchboards 20+ years old benefit from annual thermal scans as part of a condition-monitoring schedule.
Critical loads on site
Refrigeration, server rooms, medical equipment, fire systems, anywhere downtime costs more than the scan itself.
Pre-purchase or pre-handover due diligence
Buying a building or taking over a tenancy and want to confirm the electrical infrastructure is sound.
After significant load changes
Solar install, EV charger rollout, HVAC upgrade, or any other major addition that has changed the load profile.
What's Included in a Terawatt Thermal Imaging Survey
Pre-scan check
We confirm boards are running under typical load and identify anything that needs to be sorted before scanning (covers off, access points clear).
Infrared scan
Switchboards, distribution boards, MCCs, sub-mains, and where relevant UPS systems, ATS panels, and battery cabinets.
Thermal and visual imagery
Side-by-side thermal and reference photos for every panel scanned.
Anomaly classification
Findings are graded by severity, from “monitor” through to “immediate action”.
Audit-ready report
Findings, recommended actions, photographs, and a certification statement, formatted for insurer, auditor, or compliance review.
Optional remediation
If we identify a fault, we can quote the repair as part of the same engagement. Most clients prefer the continuity, but reports are vendor-neutral if you’d rather hand them to another contractor.
Who We Scan For
Terawatt provides electrical thermal imaging across the Sunshine Coast for:
- Independent supermarkets, retail centres, and food retailers
- Mid-sized commercial buildings (healthcare, education, logistics, mixed-use)
- Body corporate and strata properties
- Industrial sites and manufacturers
- Warehousing and distribution centres
- Facilities running critical or sensitive loads
Our focus is commercial and industrial. From May 2026, we no longer take on general residential electrical work, and that includes residential thermal imaging.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. The scan needs equipment running under typical load so heat patterns are visible. We open the panel cover, scan the live components, and close everything back up. Power stays on throughout.
For a typical commercial site with one main switchboard and a handful of distribution boards, expect 1 to 3 hours on site, plus reporting. Larger industrial sites with multiple MCCs and sub-boards run longer. We’ll give you a clear time and cost at quote stage.
Annually is the standard recommendation for commercial sites. Higher-risk environments (refrigeration-heavy retail, manufacturing, critical loads) often benefit from six-monthly scans. We can build a thermal imaging schedule into a broader planned maintenance program if you’d prefer not to track it yourself.
