When a Switchboard Upgrade is Worth Doing
Switchboards don’t fail on a schedule, but most show warning signs well before they cause a real problem. The boards we replace most often share a few of these traits:
- Original install is 25 to 40 years old, with ceramic or rewireable fuses still in place
- Asbestos backing panels (common in pre-1990s builds)
- Mains and submains undersized for current load, often exposed once solar, EV charging, or HVAC upgrades go in
- Repeated nuisance tripping or thermal events
- No RCD protection on circuits that now require it

- Builder is planning a fit-out, refit, or services upgrade the existing board can’t support
A switchboard upgrade is usually the prerequisite to anything else you want to do electrically. Adding solar, EV charging, batteries, or load to the building means the board has to be capable of carrying it.

For a typical mid-sized commercial board, expect a planned outage of one to two days, plus design, manufacture, and Energex coordination beforehand. Larger or staged jobs run longer. We’ll give you a clear timeline at the quote stage.
