An RCD (residual current device) is the safety switch that cuts power when it detects current leaking to earth, usually through a person. It’s the difference between a shock and a fatality. RCDs are mechanical devices, and mechanical devices wear out. Dust, humidity, vibration, and age all degrade the components that make an RCD work. A device that tripped correctly two years ago may not trip at all today, and you’d have no way of knowing until a fault happens.
Every commercial property in Queensland has a legal obligation to test its RCDs on a scheduled basis. The Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 (Qld) and the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 both require workplaces to make sure electrical safety equipment is functioning. AS/NZS 3760 sets out the testing intervals and methodology.

Operating Time Testing
The operating time test measures how quickly the RCD responds when a fault current is applied. Push-button testing only confirms that the mechanism trips. Operating time testing confirms it trips fast enough to prevent injury. AS/NZS 3760 requires operating time tests at longer intervals, typically annually for portable RCDs and every two years for fixed RCDs, and the test must be performed by a licensed electrician using calibrated instruments.
