Project Overview
The project began with an on-site inspection to assess the existing switchboard and overall electrical system. This initial visit allowed our team to compile a detailed report outlining the condition of the infrastructure and the requirements for a new switchboard. Based on the findings, we developed a custom design tailored to the property’s specific needs, ensuring full compliance with relevant standards such as AS/NZS 3000:2018.
We supplied the new switchboard along with all necessary components, including circuit breakers, fuses, and safety switches (RCDs), as well as additional materials like cabling and mounting hardware required for installation. The old switchboard was safely removed and disposed of, and the new unit was installed with all wiring and connections integrated into the existing electrical system.
Following installation, we carried out comprehensive testing to confirm the switchboard’s safe and reliable operation. Compliance certification was issued in accordance with all applicable electrical standards. To complete the project, we provided full documentation including test results, compliance certificates, and user manuals. The installation is backed by a warranty, and we offer ongoing support and maintenance to ensure continued performance.
Challenges & Solutions
Challenge | Solution |
The hotel needed to remain fully operational throughout the electrical upgrade works, as it provides essential accommodation for seasonal farm workers and other guests with no alternative housing options. | To ensure uninterrupted power during the planned 24-hour outage, we supplied and connected two 60kVA trailer-mounted generators. These units provided backup power to two wings of the hotel, maintaining continuous electricity supply and allowing guests to remain comfortably accommodated throughout the works. |
The local DNSP (Energex) advised that an upgraded cable supply to the hotel would only be approved if detailed engineering documentation could demonstrate the structural suitability of the building for attachment. Given the age and condition of the property, this approach posed significant cost and feasibility challenges, with no guarantee of approval. | To overcome this, we proposed an alternative solution to both Energex and the client: the installation of a new property pole in the corner of the site. Engineered to meet a +5kN rating, the pole was sized and positioned to comply with Energex’s structural and safety requirements. This allowed us to establish a compliant point of attachment and safely install the new mains supply, routed directly to the upgraded main switchboard location. |
The project required coordination across multiple stakeholders, including the DNSP, metering provider, traffic control, and Main Roads. Each party had specific requirements and timelines, adding complexity to the planning and execution phases. | We proactively scheduled DNSP activities well in advance and maintained clear, consistent communication with all involved stakeholders. This collaborative approach ensured that all dependencies were managed effectively, allowing the works to proceed on schedule and in full compliance with regulatory and safety requirements. |
The installation site presented extremely limited space, and during the works it became clear that the existing air conditioning units had not been accounted for in the original measurements. Their placement obstructed the installation of the new switchboard, which required additional clearance. | Upon identifying the issue, we took immediate responsibility and arranged for a licensed air conditioning contractor to remove and relocate the units to accommodate the switchboard installation. This was completed promptly and at our expense, ensuring the project remained on schedule and met all compliance requirements. |
Outcome
The project was delivered on time and met all technical and operational requirements. The upgraded site delivers enhanced safety, improved reliability, and increased electrical capacity to support future growth. Through seamless coordination and precise execution, the project was completed with minimal disruption to operations—providing maximum value to Caboolture Hotel and minimising discomfort for its guests.
